The Ice Forum Summer A season came down to one game, the championship game between the Sentinels and Duck Daddies. This was a matchup we wanted as there was a little bad blood with this team, particularly one of their players after he laid an illegal hit on one of our defenders, then tried fighting her.
We came out of the gates flying scoring two goals before they even got their second shot on net. We put 20 shots on net in the first period, scoring three goals. In the second and third period we got more efficient without shooting, scoring three on nine shots in the second, and three on eight shots in the third.
In our own end, we didn’t play great but played well enough. Shots were close with us outshooting them 37-39 en route to a 9-4 victory. The Stop It Goaltending Game Day app said I should have let in 3.65 goals, so my performance wasn’t great, but I stopped enough to get the W.
There was a moment in the third period when we were up 9-2 that there was a Duck Daddies player in my crease. I mentioned to the ref and he said, “Being in the crease doesn’t matter to me when it is 9-2.” I couldn’t argue that, but not much later I was setting up for a shot and sensed a player coming my way. I put my arm out to keep my established ground and this player pushed me out of the way as I was at the top of the crease. This resulted in some pushing and shouting when none other than the player who hit our female defender in the game earlier this season came in telling us to calm down. Things got a little more heated after that and some players took a seat in the penalty box.
On the very next series one of their players stood in the middle of the crease pushing his back end out into me resulting in the play being called dead for goaltender interference. One the ensuring power play we worked the parameter since we were up 9-2, but their goalie who doesn’t like us started shouting, “In the crease.”
We didn’t let any of that get to us as we held on for the victory, hoisted the championship trophy, and celebrated with some wings and beer at the Breakaway Grill above the rink afterward.
Stick taps to the Duck Daddies though for making it to the championship game. While there are a few players on their team we do not like, most of their team is made up of good people who are fun to play against.
Let’s hope we can repeat our efforts in the fall/winter season.
