ODR Skate with Kane Van Gate
You may have seen a Kane Van Gate’s YouTube video that dropped yesterday of him visiting an Outdoor Rink in Minnesota while he was here for the Winter Classic. Yes – that we me he was up against in the shootout. Well, I have an edit of that shootout to share as well.
When I found out he was coming to Minnesota to represent the BHLPA at the Winter Classic I knew we had to get together…because franchise goalies stick together. Originally the idea was to get together and share beer league glory day stories over a beer or two, but Kane’s obligations with the NHL and Bauer kept him pretty busy. Busy that is till Sunday before his return flight to St. Louis.
Kane asked if we could go skate on an outdoor rink – ODR for those in the game. I of course said yes, but then the question was what rink do I choose? The obvious choice was Groveland Ice Rinks in St. Paul, but they wouldn’t be opening until the day after Kane left. Instead, I took him to Highlands Park in Edina. While the warming house wasn’t open when we got there (they were unlocking it when we were leaving). No worries though, we were dressed warm for the sub-zero temperatures. I think the car said it was -5 Farenheight when we got to the park.
After Kane skated around admiring the surroundings, he warmed me up – better than any beer league warmup I’ve ever had, then we had a shootout to 7…or so we thought.
