October Saves for Mom
When I first came across October Saves a few years ago I loved the mission to raise money to fight cancer through tracking saves made during the month we observe breast cancer awareness. My family has been touched by cancer from my wife’s diagnosis in August of 2001, my Mom having part of her kidney removed over a decade ago due to kidney cancer, my Dad experiencing prostate cancer, then in the fall of 2020 Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She battled her cancer, going through chemo and radiation to be declared in remission in the spring of 2021. We don’t know how or why, but a few weeks before Mother’s Day of this year her cancer reemerged in her bones, spreading quickly. On Mother’s Day, we had to say goodbye to her.
As a way to honor Mom and maybe help out October Saves, I’ve created a profile on the October Saves site. I’m not doing this with the intent to win any prizes, I just want to do some good. If you pledge based on how many saves I make, that’s a smart move. I don’t stop many pucks. Well, maybe I stop a lot of pucks, but let in a lot of goals because of how many shots I see. I’m not sure which it is, I just know we’re a sub-.500 team that has fun. If you’re in a position to spare a few bucks- thank you. If you love the cause, but don’t have the disposable income, I totally get that too.
October Saves is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) charitable organization that began in 2014 for the purpose of raising money to fight cancer. The concept is simple. During Breast Cancer Awareness month, goalies of all ages and skill levels across North America gather pledges for each save they make during October. Funds raised benefit our amazing cancer-fighting beneficiaries across the US and Canada and goalies win prizes as they raise money!
